Russia: Matviyenko calls UK Skripal measures 'unscrupulous provocation'

*MULTIPLE SHOTS AT SOURCE* The Head of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Valentina Matviyenko described UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s measures against Russia, in response to the Skripal case, as a “despicable provocation” in a statement given in Moscow on Wednesday. Matviyenko questioned what motives Russia would have to commit such an act ahead of such important Russian... Еще events as the presidential election on March 18 and the football World Cup, saying it would only “increase tension.” Matviyenko also suggested that what she termed May’s “anti-presidential campaign” was intended “to give the world community a negative image of Russia” and “to distract the British people from serious domestic problems.” She dismissed the “poorly written script pointing to supposed Russian hallmarks” as “an unscrupulous provocation.” Earlier on Wednesday, May announced the expulsion of 23 Russian diplomats from the UK during a statement to the House of Commons. Other measures also include a boycott of the World Cup by the Royal Family, and the revocation of an invitation to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to hold talks in the UK.
