Russia: Matvienko says N. Korea 'not ready for negotiations'

Chairperson of the Federation Council of the Russian Federal Assembly, Valentina Matvienko, stated that North Korea «is not ready for negotiations now,» following her meeting with North Korean Deputy Chairman of the Supreme People's Assembly, An Tong Chun. Matvienko noted that the conversation with North Korea was «very lengthy and difficult,» adding that Pyongyang «is not ready for negotiations... Еще now» and that it considers the possession of nuclear weapons “as the only effective means of protecting their country and their people and the only guarantee of their sovereignty, referring to the 70-year uneasy history of relations with the United States.» After the meeting, Chong handed Matvienko a statement by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. In turn, Matvienko promised to study it closely. The 137th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union is being held in St. Petersburg between October 14 and 18.
