Russia: Matvienko has no ‘high hopes' for North Korea talks

Chairperson of the Federation Council of the Russian Federal Assembly Valentina Matvienko held a bilateral meeting with South Korean National Assembly Speaker Chung Sye-Kyun in St. Petersburg on Monday on the sidelines of the 137th Assembly of Inter-Parliamentary Union. Matvienko stressed that Moscow has called on North Korea «to stop any nuclear tests and launches» and that it also «addressed the United States, South Korea and other [states] to stop this military rhetoric and any sort of drills near the Korean Peninsula in order to ease the tensions and to create conditions for the resumption of negotiations.» Commenting on her talks with the North Korean delegation, which took place later in the day, Matvienko noted that «although I don't have high hopes, I will try to explain it to them so that they agree on the necessity to hold such a [joint] meeting.»
