Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu reported that the main cause of the incident on Russia's deep-water vessel was a fire in the battery compartment, while holding a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin in Moscow on Thursday.
Shoigu also stated that the vessel's crew «conducted all necessary measures to protect the reactor. It's fully functional. So we hope the repair... Еще of the submersible can be done quickly.»
According to the MoD, a deep-water research vehicle belonging to the Russian Navy was conducting a bathymetric measurement operation on Monday, in Russian territorial waters in the Barents Sea, when a fire broke out on board.
The crew managed to extinguish the flames, but fourteen seamen died due to suffocation by smoke inhalation.
The submersible has since returned to Russian Northern Fleet's main naval base, located in the city of Severomorsk.
