One-year-old Ivan Fokin, also known as the “miracle baby” of Magnitogorsk, was discharged from the Moscow Institute of Emergency Paediatric Surgery and Traumatology on Thursday after six weeks of treatment. “Vanya was treated by the whole country, it was the teamwork of rescuers, those, who carried out the transportation, clinic staff, consulting physicians and everyone else. But only Vanya... Еще — this human is the biggest hero. It’s such a joy to see him in this condition,” Leonid Roshal President of the Institute of Emergency Paediatric Surgery and Traumatology. Ivan’s mother, Olga Fokina, gave letters of thanks and a collage of family photos to the doctors who treated Ivan, also known as Vanya in Russian. The family have been a new apartment by the government, so little Ivan will celebrate his first birthday there on Saturday. The 10-month old infant spent about 36 hours in freezing conditions under the rubble after his residential building collapsed in Magnitogorsk on December 31. He was found by the rescue team on January 1. He was then delivered to the local hospital in a serious condition with multiple injuries and hypothermia. The same day the infant was transported by plane from Magnitogorsk to Moscow's Research Institute for Children's Emergency Surgery and Traumatology. Ivan survived because he was wrapped up warm in his cot when the building collapsed. The emergency services also employed hot air blowers to stave off the cold.
