SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “The Americans have already prepared a resolution [on North Korea], and without seeing the text, to say that we will block or support it would probably not be very appropriate. We need to get acquainted with it; this work is now starting on an expert level. We will proceed from those assessments, from those approaches that were set by... Еще President [Vladimir Putin] at his press conference in Xiamen. They are based on the fact that for many years now they [the Americans] have been trying to solve the problem of the Korean peninsula applying newer and newer means of pressure, while proclaiming the need for dialogue, but doing nothing for this dialogue to resume. This will be the force that will determine our position.
Recently, during the Security Council meeting, after the nuclear test of North Korea, together with our Chinese counterparts we drew attention to the joint initiative of Moscow and Beijing for the implementation of a road map, proposed by Russia and China, in order to pull this situation out of a deep trough and return it to normal negotiations. Let's see what is written in the draft resolution.
Obviously, we will push for a solution through negotiations, there is no alternative, and discourage any military solution to this problem.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov talked about the North Korea’s latest nuclear missile test and Moscow’s intention to “use judicial procedures” in its diplomatic property row with the United States. He was speaking on Wednesday on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok.
“The Americans have already prepared a resolution [on North Korea], and without seeing the text, to say that we will block or support it would probably not be very appropriate,” Lavrov said. “Obviously, we will push for a solution through negotiations, there is no alternative, and discourage any military solution to this problem,” he added.
Referring to the US withdrawing Russia’s permission to use its Consulate General in San Francisco and other diplomatic facilities, Lavrov said that any country has the right “to withdraw permission for a diplomatic mission of any other country.” He added that Russia’s decision to “use judicial procedures” is connected with the “fact that the Russian state owns those buildings that that have now practically been seized” and not “the US law to permit or revoke permits.”
