Russia: Lavrov proposes 'Barents Davos' at Euro-Arctic Council in Arkhangelsk

Russian Foreign Ministry Sergei Lavrov suggested establishing a top-level regional forum in the Barents area, «Barents Davos,» during the ministerial session of the Barents Euro-Arctic Council (BEAC) in Arkhangelsk, Thursday. Lavrov stressed the forum could serve a «permanent discussion platform involving members of political, business, academic communities and media to discuss the entire... Еще Barents agenda», adding that Moscow expects to receive support for the initiative. Russian top diplomat outlined that «ensuring the sustainable development of the entire region and creating favourable living conditions for citizens» should stay a priority for BEAC. During the meeting, a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iceland jokingly warned the Russian foreign minister about a large number of fans in Viking helmets coming to Russia for the 2018 World Cup. Lavrov in turn praised Icelandic football team saying «they are amateur football players. That’s why they draw even more admiration.» The Council of the Barents Euro-Arctic Region was established as a forum for regional cooperation in 1993. It consists of Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Finland and Sweden, as well as the Commission of the European Communities.
