Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova slammed
the Ukrainian government after Russian journalist Anna Kurbatova was detained in Kiev in a press conference in Moscow, Thursday.
“We cannot describe it in any other way than the kidnapping of a Russian journalist,” she said, adding “it is difficult to classify it differently when in broad daylight, people come along, do not... Еще introduce themselves, seize the mobile phone and documents, do not allow [the journalist] to call a Russian overseas service, family, close ones or employer. Then, the person [journalist] just disappears without a trace for several hours.”
Zakharova described the situation as a “new word in the sphere that is called the freedom of press” when a “journalist who is visibly working in the capital of Ukraine, and does not spread illegal materials is called a 'security threat.'”
The spokesperson also condemned the lack of communication from Ukraine and the international community on the situation.
According to a Facebook post on Wednesday by Ukrainian Security Services Press Secretary, Elena Gityanskaya, «Russian propagandist Anna Kurbatova will be forcibly returned to the Russian Federation,» adding that «the necessary documents are currently being drawn up for her official expulsion.»
Many Russian television channels have been banned from broadcasting in Ukraine since 2014 including RT, Russia 1, NTV and Zvezda.
