Their grandmother was filmed in Makhachkala, while their grandfather was filmed in Grozny. «How can you go to heaven, leaving your children in hell?» asked the girls' grandfather upon seeing footage of Khadija and Fatima, adding that «heaven is when children are running around you and flourishing.» The parents of Khadija and Fatima reportedly left for Turkey two years ago taking their children with them. Khadija and Fatima were then reportedly left in an orphanage in Baghdad, Iraq, while their parents went to fight for the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) in Mosul. Head of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov has ordered his representative in the Middle East to use his diplomatic connections to secure the return of Khadija and Fatima, as well as other children. There are reportedly five Russian-speaking children being housed in an orphanage in Baghdad. Their parents took them from Russia and the CIS when they joined IS.
