Russia: FIFA heads to Volgograd Arena under construction for World Cup 2018

A joint delegation of FIFA experts and representatives from the Russia 2018 Local Organising Committee (LOC) inspected the construction works at the Volgograd Arena stadium, on Tuesday. Chief operating officer of LOC Russia 2018 Dmitri Godunov was joined by FIFA Competitions and Events Chief Officer Colin Smith, as well as Vice-Governor of the Volgograd region Evgeni Harichkin. The FIFA... Еще delegation was shown around the stadium where they inspected the work that is being carried out. Speaking to journalists, Smith thanked the deputy governor on behalf of FIFA saying, «we can really see the efforts that are going in to making Volgograd a successful host city of the FIFA World Cup.» FIFA is carrying out an examination of the seven stadiums which have not preciously hosted FIFA Confederations Cup sports events. Volgograd Arena is being constructed on the site of the former Central stadium once stood and is set to accommodate a total of 45,000 people. The stadium is due to be completed in December 2017. The 2018 FIFA World Cup it is scheduled to take place in Russia from 14 June to 15 July, 2018. A total of 64 matches will be played in 12 venues located in 11 cities across Russia, with the final being expected to take place in Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.
