Russia: Federation Council ratifies Tartus naval base agreement with Syria

The Russian Federal Council, the upper house of the Russian parliament, approved the expansion agreement of Russia's military port in the Syrian city of Tartus, in Moscow on Tuesday. Victor Bondarev, Chairman of Defence and Security of the Federal Council stated that the agreement is «realisation of this agreement is a certain contribution of Russia into strengthening the international community... Еще and stabilisation of the situation in the Syrian Arab Republic.» The document covers the period of 49 years and can be automatically prolonged for an extra 25 years. According to the agreement, the Russian Federation has the right to keep about 11 warships in the financial and technical support posts.
