Eyewitnesses described how an An-24 passenger plane crashed at the regional airport of Nizhneangarsk in Russia's Buryatia republic on Thursday.
“I could see that something wasn’t right with the plane. I see it going and going and its speed was over 100 [km/h],” one local eyewitness said.
“It should either slow down, but at that speed, to stop by the end of the runway would not have been possible... Еще,” he added.
“The first explosion produced a huge fireball then smoke. Extremely black smoke. We ran over there to see if we could help,” he said, adding that the emergency service then attended the scene.
“There were lots of vehicles, the fire service was attending and paramedic teams. I didn’t see any passengers because they had left the aircraft before it burst into flames,” another eyewitness recalled.
The aircraft, which was flying from Ulan-Ude to Nizhneangarsk, overshot the runway, breaking through a barrier and catching fire, according to the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
Two crew members were killed and nine people injured in the incident, the ministry also said.
The plane had 47 people on board, five crew members and one child. The incident is being investigated.
