Russia: European Council's Skripal statement 'regrettable' — Foreign Ministry

Russian Foreign Ministry official Artyom Kozhin said that European Council's statement on the poisoning of former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal in Salisbury is «regrettable.» The ministry's deputy director of the information and press department spoke at a press briefing in Moscow on Friday. Kozhin said, «The statement on the chemical incident in Salisbury made during a European... Еще Council meeting on March 22 is regrettable. The fact that the EU holds Russia accountable for the incident just because there are no other alternative plausible explanations is basically a groundless accusation against us. The European Council's readiness to agree with the UK explanation of the Salisbury incident could be explained by a willingness to support British Prime Minister May, who found herself in a rather difficult position.» Earlier in the day, the European Council issued a statement that expressed solidarity with the UK regarding the Skripal poisoning case. The statement condemned the attack «in the strongest possible terms,» adding that the European Council «agrees with the United Kingdom government's assessment that it is highly likely that the Russian Federation is responsible and that there is no plausible alternative explanation.»
