Russia: 'Disinformation' on alleged chemical weapons use may sabotage Syrian ceasefire — Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that Moscow considers it likely that there will be further «disinformation» about the alleged chemical weapons used in Syria, which he said may sabotage ceasefire agreements in the country. Lavrov made the statement at a press conference held alongside his Portuguese counterpart Augusto Santos Silva in Moscow on Monday. Lavrov said, «There has... Еще already been disinformation in the mass media that last night or this morning chlorine gas was used in Eastern Ghouta as a toxic substance, citing an anonymous individual who lives in the United States.» «Other disinformation is likely», he said. The Russian Foreign Minister stressed that the US will continue such attempts «for the sole purpose of denigrating the government forces» and «implementing the scenario of creating a quasi-state, the scenario of a split of Syria.» Lavrov also noted that a ceasefire in Syria does not extend to the actions carried out by the Syrian government, with the support of Russian forces, aimed at fighting against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL), Al-Nusra Front (also known as Jabhat al-Nusra/Jabhat Fateh al-Sham) and other armed groups that are affiliated with them.
