Russia: Court rejects director Serebrennikov’s bid for release on bail

The Moscow City Court rejected Kirill Serebrennikov’s appeal to be released on bail, Monday, with the director set to remain under house arrest until October 19. However, the judge softened the conditions of the initial sentence allowing Serebrennikov to leave the house daily from 6 to 8 p.m. Serebrennikov’s lawyer asked earlier to release his client on bail of 68 million roubles (USD 1,182,547... Еще; EUR 996,108) which is the exact amount of embezzlement he had been accused of. The artistic director of the Gogol Centre theatre was charged last month with embezzling 68 million rubles (USD 1,182,547; EUR 996,108) of state funds allocated for the project ‘Platform’ between 2011-2014. If found guilty, Serebrennikov could be sentenced to 10 years in prison.
