Russia: CoE 'ensures unity' of European continent — Lavrov

Russia views the Council of Europe as an «independent universal European organisation» capable of ensuring «the unity of both the humanitarian and legal space of the continent,” stated Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a meeting with Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland in Moscow, Friday. “We have always viewed and continues to view the Council of Europe as... Еще an independent universal European organisation which through unique convention mechanism ensures both the humanitarian and legal space of the continent,” noted Lavrov. He then expressed his concern “about the situation in the PACE [Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe] with attempts to discriminate the deputies.” Jagland explained that he was visiting Moscow to discuss the possibility of bringing back “the parliamentary delegation of Russian Federation to Parliamentary Assembly, so that all of the organs can work properly.” PACE suspended the Russian delegation's voting rights following Crimea's reunification with the Russian Federation in 2014. In response, the Russian Parliamentary delegation refrained from participation in PACE.
