The brand new anti-torpedo ship named after the Hero of the Soviet Union Ivan Antonov was launched from the Sredne-Nevski (the Middle Neva) Shipbuilding Plant in St. Petersburg on Wednesday. The Ivan Antonov minesweeper is unique and distinct for its hull, which is fully made of monolithic fiberglass. This manufacturing technology enabled to meet two targets — make the ship's body more durable... Еще and 20 percent lighter in terms of the weight. To date, the vessel can boast of the largest body made of such a material. The launched anti-torpedo ship belongs to the 12700 Alexandrit project and is aimed at countering the so-called 'smart mines.' Just before the ship was commissioned, it had been blessed by the priests and the granddaughter of Ivan Antonov had smashed a champagne bottle against its side. The Sredne-Nevski Shipbuilding Plant is presently working on the production of the other three same-project minesweepers.
