Russia: Admiral Essen frigate leaves Sevastopol for Black Sea straits

Russia's Black Sea Fleet frigate Admiral Essen left Sevastopol for the Black Sea straits on Tuesday as spectators watched on from the edge of the Russian port, marking the vessel's first patrol this year. The vessel is 124.8 metres long (409ft) with a displacement up to 4,035 tons. It is equipped with armament systems including Kalibr missiles, Igla rockets, 100-milimetre artillery weapons, as well as a helipad. The Essen and along with the Admiral Grigorovich are the only frigates in the Black Sea Fleet to have carried out cruise missile strikes on self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) positions in Syria.
