Russia: Activist gets 3.5 years in prison for violence against police

Moscow’s Meshchansky District Court sentenced 48-year-old activist Evgeny Kovalenko to 42 months in penal colony on Wednesday for throwing a trash can at a National Guard officer during an unauthorised rally in Moscow on July 27. According to the case files, Kovalenko pushed one officer and threw a trash bin at another. He was detained on the same day. Kovalenko admitted that he threw the bin... Еще, but insists he did not plan to harm the police but to protect a detained person. Kovalenko’s lawyer Mansur Gilmanov commented that the case was handled “quickly and deceitfully, without understanding what was really going on.” Protests have been taking place in Moscow since July after the Central Election Commission disqualified 57 candidates from running in the city council election, claiming irregularities in the applications.
