Pope Francis held a celebration in Blaj, beatifying several bishops who died under the rule of communism in Romania, during the third and final day of his visit to Romania on Sunday.
Thousands of Catholics gathered for the ceremony, which was held on the Liberty Fields in the central Romanian city of Blaj, where an important nationalist rally took place in 1848. Pope Francis also held a mass in Transylvania on Saturday, at the Franciscan monastery in Sumuleu Ciucis, considered one of the most important Roman Catholic pilgrimage sites in southeastern Europe.
