Romania: Anti-govt. rally continues as night falls on Bucharest

Thousands of people continued to protest against the Romanian government in Bucharest, late Saturday night and into the first hours of Sunday morning, just one day after more than 400 people were injured in clashes with police. On Friday, more than 50,000 protesters hit the streets to demonstrate against the ruling Social Democrat (PSD) government and denounce what they describe as «corruption... Еще, low wages and a corrupt judiciary.» As the demonstration escalated, protesters threw bottles while riot police deployed tear gas and water cannon. Several police officers were also injured. Romanian President Klaus Iohannis later condemned police action in a Facebook statement, saying: «I firmly condemn riot police's brutal intervention, strongly disproportionate to the actions of the majority of people.»
