Portugal: Southgate praises 'deserved' win over Switzerland in the UEFA Nations League third-place match
England national team manager Gareth Southgate praised his players for beating Switzerland in the UEFA Nations League third-place playoff, speaking at a post-match press conference in Guimaraes on Sunday.
Despite winning after a penalty shootout, Southgate said his side deserved to win... Еще because of the number of chances and hitting the post.
«It was important we responded today with a high level of performance. The players adapted really well, we changed the shape, and they carried that out really well. And we should have won the game, we deserved to win the game with the opportunities and the number of times we hit the woodwork,» said Southgate.
The man of the match, England's goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, managed to score the fifth penalty and save the next one that his opponents took, to give his side the bronze medal of the competition.
«I practised a lot in training for the last three weeks taking penalties because it might be decisive in the game, and everyone's got to play the part in the penalty shootout if it comes to it, and I practice well and hard,» said Pickford.
Swiss national team manager Vladimir Petkovic congratulated England on their win, and said that his side must practice penalty shootouts for the next time.
A goalless draw after 120 minutes of play, England were more successful in the penalty shootout than Switzerland, with the result ending 6:5 for the Three Lions.
