The Tour de Pologne commemorated the deceased Belgian cyclist Bjorg Lambrecht with a minute of silence in Jaworzno on Tuesday, with his team quietly crossing the starting line. Lambrecht was killed in a crash on Monday, during the race's third stage.
«There are many dangerous places on the race, corners, descents where cyclists ride 90 km/h, but there the road was wide, the speed was around 30 km... Еще/h and there was no collision with another rider. He just pulled to the side of the road and fell into a concrete culvert. He had such heavy injuries that nothing could be done,» said race director Czeslaw Lang.
Lambrecht arrived at the Rybnik hospital in «very serious condition» said to hospital spokesperson Michal Sieron. «There was not even enough time to transfer him to an operation room so a surgery was carried down there in the emergency room. Unfortunately, it didn't help. Due to very heavy internal injuries about 17.40 p.m. (15.40 GMT) the patient died.»
According to Lang, today's stage was held not to compete but to honour the deceased cyclist.
