Poland: Pres. Duda attends ceremony marking 80th anniv. of first Auschwitz transport

Polish President Andrzej Duda took part in the ceremonies on the 80th anniversary of the deportation of the first Polish prisoners to the Nazi concentration camp in Oswiecim on Sunday. Duda, who is running for re-election, laid flowers at the Witold Pilecki monument. Pilecki was a Polish cavalry officer, intelligence agent, and resistance leader who created the first comprehensive intelligence report on the atrocities committed at the Auschwitz concentration camp by the Nazis. According to the latest findings, out of the 728 prisoners deported on 14 June 1940, 325 survived, 292 perished (215 in Auschwitz), whereas the fate of another 111 individuals is unknown to this date.
