Polish nationalists marched in Ocwiesim on Sunday, on the day that marks the 80th anniversary of the first deportation of Poles to the Auschwitz concentration camp.
«The Auschwitz camp was built by Germans, not some mythical Nazis but by Germans for Poles. This is the message behind this silence march today,» said Tomasz Kalinowski from the Independent March Society.
The march was banned by local authorities due to anti-Semitic incidents in previous years. Despite the ban, a crowd of between 200 and 300 people walked through the city, with Polish flags, towards the Auschwitz concentration camp.
They were surrounded by police officers who formed a line between them and the camp, blocking the march several hundred metres from the Auschwitz Museum.
