German Chancellor Angela Merkel said French President Emmanuel Macron's doubts over accepting new members in the before deep EU reforms should not prevent accession negotiations, during a press conference at the Western Balkans summit in Poznan on Friday.
«French President Emmanuel Macron has pointed out that the mechanisms of work within the European Union need to be improved further,» Merkel... Еще said. «I share his assessment but for me, in my eyes, this is not a refusal to continue the accession negotiations or to begin accession negotiations with potential members.»
On Monday, Macron said: «I am firm on the fact that I will refuse any kind of enlargement before a deep reform of our institutional functioning, in the spirit of seriousness.»
North Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev added that he did not expect immediate integration into the EU but believed the country would «definitely» become a member eventually, though it might take up to ten years.
The Western Balkans Summit, where the German Chancellor was meeting with various European leaders, is dedicated to continuing accession negotiations for Western Balkan countries including Montenegro, Serbia, North Macedonia and Albania, during the five-year halt on EU enlargement initiated in 2014 by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.
