Poland: Anti-government protesters gather in Warsaw despite ban on public gatherings

Hundreds of people attended an unsanctioned gathering at Warsaw’s Old Town, Thursday, demonstrating against a march led by the governing Law and Justice (PiS) party to commemorate the 2010 Smolensk plane crash, in which 96 people, including former Polish President Lech Kaczynski, died. Some demonstrators stood in silence while holding white roses as well as the Polish and European flags, as... Еще others raised their chained wrists to symbolise the authorities' perceived abuse of power in banning public gatherings. Since rising to power in 2015, the PiS has introduced several reforms, including ones to Poland's Constitutional Court and the ability of independent journalists to cover parliamentary proceedings, triggering country-wide protests as well as sanctions from the European Union.
