Demonstrators took the street of Quezon City to protest against the state of democracy in the country and mark the 48th anniversary of the declaration of martial law made by former Philippine's president Ferdinand Marcos on Monday.
Protesters, who maintained social distancing and wore masks in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus, drew unfavourable comparisons between the current government of President Rodrigo Duterte and the Marcos administration, condemning Duterte as a «fascist.»
«Duterte promised us to eliminate drugs, corruption and crime. That he will give free land to farmers, eliminate contractualisation on labour force. Did Duterte accomplish these promises?» protest organiser and human rights lawyer Neri Colmenares asked the crowd ironically.
Demonstrators later burnt a combined coroanvirus-Duterte effigy as night fell.
