Philippines: Alert level raised following Mayon volcano explosion

Philippine authorities raised the alert level on Mount Mayon on Monday, after the country's most active volcano exploded, spewing a plume of ash, lava fragments and steam into the air. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the alert level to four on a scale of five, warning that a «hazardous eruption» may be imminent, even within hours or days. More than 40,000 people have been evacuated since Mount Mayon rumbled back to life on January 13.
