Peru: Tear gas fired upon striking teachers in Lima

Attempting to disperse a crowd of protesting teachers, in Lima, Thursday, the Peruvian police fired on them with tear gas and water cannons. One teacher, Angel Barreto, who was participating in the protest, was incredulous at the policing method used to subdue the crowd, «I come to claim my rights and they treat me like this. This is how the police and the Peruvian state react to me. Simply... Еще because we ask that they attend to our rights.» Waving an empty tear gas canister he cried, «Look, this is the police's weapon.» Thursday's protest is the latest in the series of strikes in the past two months, with thousands of teachers hitting the Peruvian streets nationwide to demand better working conditions and an increase in salaries.
