Peru: Police fire tear gas at protest against newly sworn-in president Merino

Police used tear gas to disperse protesters in Lima on Tuesday following the swearing-in of Head of the Peruvian Congress Manuel Merino as president. Protesters were seen holding Peruvian flags, chanting slogans and running from tear gas. People were later spotted leaving the protest area, visibly affected by tear gas with some struggling to breathe. Earlier the same day, lawmakers voted to remove Martin Vizcarra from office over his response to the coronavirus and corruption allegations. Manuel Merino is Peru's third president since 2016, after Congress dismissed Martin Vizcarra's predecessor Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.
