Peru: Number of Venezuelan migrants entering through northern border doubles

Long queues formed at the Binational Border Care Centre Tumbes on Wednesday, as the number of Venezuelan migrants trying to enter Peru through the northern border has doubled from 1,5000 to more than 3,000 people per day. Luis Figeroa, the intendant of the Binational Border Care Centre, said that «the flow of immigrants in these last days has been increasing since we have reached approximately 50... Еще% of the regular flow; the regular flow oscillated between 1500 to 2000 people.» Footage shows Venezuelans waiting in line in order to be processed. Alberto Cepedolmo, a Venezuelan immigrant, explains that he initially had a later day of entry scheduled, but that he «had to accelerate the trip,» due to the fact that from June 15 onwards, Venezuelan migrants entering Peru will need a humanitarian visa in addition to their passport. According to the United Nations, more than 4 million Venezuelans have left their country due to the economic crisis in recent years.
