Peru: Indigenous protesters occupy oil plant after spill in northern region

Several indigenous communities occupied a reservoir in protest on Sunday after an oil spill contaminated the water and soil in Puerto America in the northern department of Loreto. Indigenous protesters carried spears and chanted on the oil reservoir premises. «More than 40 years of oil exploitation, look at the state we are in, without basic services, water or sewage, we do not have anything... Еще,» said a protester addressing the crowd. Peruvian state-owned petroleum company Petroperu has reportedly accused the locals of intentionally rupturing the oil pipeline. Lima has declared a state of emergency after the oil spill reportedly affected as many as 1,000 households in its aftermath.
