Peru: Hundreds of beds delivered to Lima hospitals as COVID crisis worsens

Approximately 500 new ICU beds have been delivered to hospital in the greater area of Lima, as the coronavirus crisis is worsening in the country and the number of deaths is rising. «We have delivered, within 30 days, 500 hospital beds — 300 in metropolitan Lima and 100 north of the capital and 100 for the provinces south of the capital,» explained on Thursday, the executive director of Legacy of the Pan American and Para-Pan American Games Lima 2019, Alberto Valenzuela, from a temporary intensive care unit set up next to the Hospital Hipolito Unanue and designed to treat COVID-19 patients. Peru has implemented strict protective and restrictive measures to tackle the COVID-19 outbreak at a relatively early stage but has struggled to cope with the spread of the virus. Peru has recorded more than 341,500 cases of coronavirus with over 12,600 deaths related to the disease, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
