Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Lima's streets on Monday, following the resignation of interim President Manuel Merino and the Congress' election of Francisco Sagasti as a new interim president.
«It is a moment of reflection, it is a moment to ask ourselves where it was that we lost our way. It is a time to amend and it is a time to move decisively towards a better future for all Peruvians,» said Sagasti speaking outside the Congress.
Janet Quiroga, one of the demonstrators supported the new interim leader, calling him a «professional,» while another one, Alejandra Carpio, said that she wanted dismissed Martin Vizcarra to come back.
Merino, who took office less than a week ago after the dismissal of Martin Vizcarra, announced his «irrevocable» resignation in a televised address to the nation on Sunday, minutes after the Congress demanded that he quits his post.
