A group of experts from the Chinese laboratory Sinopharm arrived at the Jorge Chavez international airport in Lima, Wednesday, to start the phase three clinical trials of the coronavirus vaccine.
Members of the delegation were seen leaving the airport with protective suits, loading suitcases, and boxes with materials to carry out the vaccine trials.
At the airport, they were received by Chinese Ambassador to Peru, Liang Yu, and Dr. German Malaga, the head researcher for the vaccine at the Cayetano Heredia University.
«We are excited about the whole planning process, to start the study. Finally, we have the input with which we will start working next week,» said Malaga.
«We have been very careful. It has been all planning that we have had in these days to make it happen effectively without losing time or running risks, and to pass without any degradation or any setback with the technical part of conservation,» added Malaga.
According to local media, 3,000 people have registered to be part of the clinical trials of the vaccine that will be administered by the University Cayetano Heredia. Another group of the same amount will register through the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos to receive the candidate vaccine.
As of this Wednesday, Peru has reported 657,129 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, with 29,068 deaths related to the disease, according to figures compiled by the Johns Hopkins University.
