The President of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) Alejandro Dominguez announced on Thursday that the return leg of the Copa Libertadores final between arch-rivals River Plate and Boca Juniors will be played at Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on December 9.
Among the factors behind the decision, Dominguez cited safety statistics, functional airport connections to Latin... Еще America, and the 'great tradition of football' of the Spanish capital.
The first leg, which was played at Boca's Bombonera stadium on November 11, ended in a 2:2 draw.
On November 24, a few hours before the kick off in the return match, Boca's bus was pelted with stones and bottles by River fans in the vicinity of River's Monumental Stadium, resulting in heavy damage to the club's bus and several injured players in the Boca squad.
The incident prompted an immediate postponement of the match for the following day, when it was yet again postponed until further notice, due to Boca Juniors' official requests that River are disqualified and that Boca are awarded the trophy.
