The US Navy Hospital Ship USNS Comfort, which is on a mission to bring health care services to regions hit by the Venezuelan humanitarian crisis, docked at the port of Colon on Panama's Caribbean coast on Thursday.
Patients, mainly Venezuelan migrants, were waiting to be examined by the military medical personnel on board.
Lieutenant Commander Jeany Fortunato explained that «most of them are... Еще migrants who have left the country for various reasons and they are seeking access to care.» According to the United Nations, around 4 million Venezuelans have left their country due to the economic and political crisis in recent years.
Panamanian President Laurentino Cortizo was also present on board, with the Commander of the US Southern Command Craig Faller. The latter disclosed that the US is «sharing information» with other parties in the region about how to manage the current situation.
The personnel is expected to perform 120 surgeries and see 500 patients every day during the ship's stay.
The US Navy Hospital Ship USNS Comfort will be in Panama from August 7 to 12.
