Pakistan: Worshippers self-flagellate to mark Ashura in Rawalpindi

Shia Muslims commemorated Ashura by self-flagellating, in a bloody ritual for the historic 'Bibi Ka Alam' procession taking place in Rawalpindi, on Sunday. Worshippers could be seen whipping themselves with chains, with some being treated for wounds, while others performed other rituals mourning the death of Husayn ibn Ali, the third Shia imam, also known as Imam Hussein. Ashura, which takes place on the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic Hijri calendar, is a day of mourning which commemorates the killing of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, as well as his family and companions at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram, 61 AH (10 October, 680 AD).
