Pakistan: Protesters stamp on photos of Macron in Karachi

Protesters stamped on an image French President Emmanuel Macron and set an effigy of him alight outside the French Embassy in Karachi, on Wednesday, following his comments on Islam. Crowds of supporters of the Jamaat-e-Islami party held signs reading 'My prophet, my ideal' and images of the French leader with a footprint on his face. Earlier this month, the French president said that Islam is «a religion that is in crisis all over the world today,» as he announced a bill to 'strengthen' a 1905 law that officially separated church and state in the country. Religious tensions in France have risen in recent weeks following the killing of French teacher Samuel Paty on October 16, after he showed cartoons depicting Prophet Muhammad to his students during a discussion on freedom of speech.
