Pakistan: Karachi protesters condemn acquittal of Christian woman in blasphemy case

The conservative Islamist political party Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan held a protest in Karachi on Friday, condemning the Supreme Court's acquittal of a Christian woman condemned to death for blasphemy. Protesters carried banners and flags slamming the court ruling as they chanted slogans condemning the release of Asia Noreen, better known as Asia Bibi. Nation-wide strikes and sit-in protests... Еще have been called upon by Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan political party among others. Asia Bibi was sentenced to death by hanging in 2010 for allegedly making derogatory remarks about the Prophet Muhammad during a dispute with coworkers. The dispute arose after she was reprimanded for drinking water from her neighbours' glass because she's not a Muslim, reports say. Bibi has denied the allegations, but has spent most of the last eight years in solitary confinement. As a result of today's ruling, Chief Justice Saqib Nisarm reportedly stated Bibi can be released if not wanted in connection with any other case.
