A pretzel-eating contest drew enthusiastic crowds to a local bar in Providence, Rhode Island, USA, as part of an annual festival in the city, on Sunday.
The contest, which had 12 participants including 10 ranked competitive eaters, was a first for the Major League Eating organisation, a sports group that organises competitive eating events.
Competitors stuffed themselves with the savoury bread... Еще as well as many lubricating sips of water, as they were challenged to eat as many pretzels as they could within just eight minutes for a top prize of $2,000 (€1,763).
«This is the inaugural, the first ever, la primera, Malted Barley World Pretzel Eating Championship. It is the first pretzel eating championship in Major League Eating history», confirmed Major League Eating master of ceremonies Sam Barclay.
Contest winner Geoffrey Esper, who managed to wolf down 26, said this was his second contest in two days, but he was not prepared to eat that much: «I really didn't prepare for this contest. I didn't have any of these pretzels to practice with. I actually had a contest yesterday in Austin. So I flew back, and woke up late and came right down.»
The idea for a pretzel-eating contest came to 'The Malted Barley' owner Ron Koller, after attending a local fair in Wisconsin which hosted the world's first cheese curd competitive eating contest, when he decided to launch their own contest in Rhode Island's capital.
