Relations have been fraught between Pyongyang and Seoul since the 1950-1953 Korean conflict, which ended with an armistice but without a peace treaty ever being signed. The PyeongChang Winter Olympics seemingly encouraged warming relations on the peninsula, after a year of heightened tensions over the North's nuclear and missile programs.
