Violent clashes erupted between protesters and police in the Nigerian capital of Abuja on Monday, following a protest for the release of imprisoned Shi'a Muslim cleric Ibrahim El-Zakzaky. Police forcibly removed protesters from the scene and put them into custody. In the footage police officers are seen beating up a protester. According to local media, one Shiite member was killed at the protest and over 100 have been detained. Several casualties have been reported. The clashes erupted following a ban that was issued last Friday by the police regarding protests and rallies at the popular Unity Fountain. Ibrahim El-Zakzaky is the leader of Nigeria's Islamic Movement (IMN) and was detained by the Nigerian Army in December 2015. He has remained under state detention since then.
