A group of protesters, said to be Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) supporters, disrupted a funeral Mass for Nicaraguan poet and former priest Ernesto Cardenal, held in Managua on Tuesday.
Cardenal died on March 1 at the age of 95 after cardiac and respiratory complications. The poet was an FSLN supporter and faced papal sanction over his political ties for over 30 years. However, he... Еще distanced himself from the movement in 2007, after the return to government of current president Daniel Ortega.
«It is an act of clumsiness to have sent these people, poor humble people, who are sent here to play such a sad, dishonourable role, one day that we should all be burying one of the great Nicaraguans of this century and the last century Ernesto Cardenal. There is nothing more to regret, and hopefully one day we will enjoy enough freedom and democracy to bury our dead in peace, which is a fundamental right,» said Nicaraguan writer Sergio Ramirez, one of those attending the mass.
Cardenal will be buried on March 6, in a community he founded on the Solentiname Islands, an archipelago on Lake Nicaragua.
