Nicaragua: 'An intensely great man' — Ernesto Cardenal remembered during his wake

Footage from Monday in Managua shows the wake of renowned Nicaraguan poet Ernesto Cardenal, who died on Sunday at the age of 95 as a result of kidney and heart failure. The video also shows the conditions in which cardinal, former priest and leader of the Sandinista revolution lived. «I have to say that I never had a bad word from him, I never had a scolding, he is a man who loved the truth, if... Еще he caught you a lie this is how far you would get with him,» said Luz Marina, his personal assistant. Ernesto Cardenal was a key figure in the creation of the theological current of Liberation Theology, and was also a sympathizer of the Sandinista National Liberation Front, though he distanced himself from the movement in 2007, after the return of current President Daniel Ortega, of whom he was critical. «[He was] a man of integrity, a man who believed in what he believed and went deeply into it, that is why he joined the revolution because he believed in it. Later on, he was disappointed because he saw that the leaders lacked ethics and distanced himself from it,» Marina said. The body of the cardinal will be buried in a community he founded on an island in Lake Nicaragua, after a religious service in Managua's cathedral.
