Judges at the International Criminal Court in the Hague ruled that the court's prosecutor can open an investigation into alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Afghanistan, on Thursday.
The decision overturns an earlier decision made by a lower court and gave the green light to the court's Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda to launch a full inquiry on crimes committed by the... Еще Taliban, Afghan forces and the US military in the war-torn country.
«The Appeals Chamber considers it appropriate to amend the appealed decision to the effect that the prosecutor is authorised to commence an investigation,» announced presiding Judge Piotr Hofmanski.
A pretrial chamber last year said an investigation would not be in the interests of justice as the odds of success were low.
Thursday's hearing came days after US President Donald Trump signed a historic peace deal with Taliban militants, in an effort to bring an end to 18 years of war in Afghanistan and allowing the US troops to withdraw from the country.
