Nauru: Leaked Trump-Turnball call sparks refugee protest

Refugees gathered to protest the US President Donald Trump and the Australian Prime Minister Malcom Turnball in the Meneng District of the island nation of Nauru, on Monday. The protest was sparked after a conversation transcript of a phone call between the world leaders was leaked late last week. In the transcript Trump called the refugees detained on the island as «bad» and «prisoners.» The... Еще phone call was on the subject of the previous Obama's administration deal with the Australian government, in which the US pledged to take some 1,200 refugees from island. The Washington Post published the transcripts of the conversation between the American and Australian leaders, where Trump criticised and objected to the deal. The White House did not confirm the credibility of the document. A report released in 2015 detailed extensive cases of abuse of adults and children, including physical and sexual violence inside the Nauru Regional Processing Centre. Following the report, the Nauruan government announced that the gates of the centre will be left open, allowing detainees freedom of movement, however, activists and refugees later revealed evidence showing that this was not implemented. According to activists, Broadspectrum, the company which operates the refugee processing centre erected fences blocking the camp's entrance and locked the gates each afternoon during the protests that followed the reportedly to prevent people in the Nauruan community joining the refugees. According to media reports, Nauru hiked up its visa charge for journalists up to $6,089 (€5,168) non-refundable fee for a visa application to the island after the government reportedly decried the international coverage of the detention centre. Critics accuse the authorities of preventing journalists from documenting the squalid conditions for refugees at the centre calling on Nauro to lift the restrictions.
