Moscow: Lavrov urges Iran to show 'restraint' with nuke deal

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called for Iran and the European signatories to the the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreement to honour the nuclear deal, in Moscow on Tuesday. “We urge our Iranian colleagues to show restraint and in no way be subjected to emotions and to respect the key provisions of the agreement,” the Russian diplomat said at a joint press conference with... Еще his Irish counterpart Simon Coveney. Lavrov added that Moscow calls for European countries to “assume responsibility” and “to deliver on the promises and duties” of the agreement. He also said that the Europeans need to make the INSTEX [Instrument in Support of Trade Exchanges] payment tool truly effective in order to help Iran. “Without this, it would be difficult to engage in a meaningful and efficient dialogue on the preservation of the JCPOA,” stated Lavrov. Irish Foreign Minister Coveney on his part noted that the EU has undertaken several efforts in terms of saving the nuke deal “despite the fact that it has become very, very difficult to do that because of the US position.” “Regardless of differences that are clearly there in terms of other issues, points of differences with Iran and the EU, the JCPOA is a very important agreement that the EU values, wants to protect,” he said.
