Morocco: Screams, tears mark first hearing of teenage gang-rape

A crowd of women raised their voices together in protest outside the court of Beni Mellal province on Thursday, as 12 men accused of kidnapping and raping a 17-year-old girl from Oulad Ayad town, appeared in court for their first hearing. Seventeen-year-old Khadija said she was kidnapped mid-June by a group of men who held her captive, raped her, forced her to take drugs and tattooed her arms with crude drawings including a swastika and a naked woman. The girl was returned to her family on August 17 after her father struck a deal with the kidnappers by promising not to go to the police. According to a police report, the defendants admitted having sex with the teenager but claimed it was consensual, an act constituting also a crime as the girl was under 18.
